Mount Sole

Mount Sole

Parco Regionale Storico Monte Sole

The Parco Regionale Storico di Monte Sole covers an area of about 6,300 hectares stretching over the Municipalities of Marzabotto, Monzuno and Grizzana Moranti. Mount Sole (826 m) and its park are part of a small chain in the province of Bologna between the Reno River and the Setta stream.

PLACE OF MEMORY

The Park is of interest not only for its natural beauties and rich wildlife but also for its historical importance related to the tragic events that took place in Marzabotto on 29 September 1944. Hundreds of innocent people together with a large part of the Brigata Partigiana Stella Rossa were massacred by Nazi-Fascist soldiers on Mount Sole; one of the most tragic pages of the Liberation War and of Italy’s history was unfortunately written right here, in the valleys and peaceful hills of these areas. The German soldiers massacred 770 harmless people, mostly women and children, believed to help the partisans in this area.

Thanks to a regional law, the Parco Regionale Storico di Monte Sole was created in memory of the atrocities committed here; this is the first park of this type in Italy, a memorial of those dramatic events for future generations. The “Il memoriale” itinerary inside the park touches the symbolic places of the massacre, starting from the Il Poggiolo Visitor Centre up to the top of Mount Sole. Here visitors will find a stone in memory of the partisans that died in these valleys during the Liberation War.

FAUNA AND FLORA

The Park offers much more than just a journey back in Italy’s history: in fact more than 936 plant species have been identified here. Considering that the regional flora includes about 2700 species, about 1/3 is present in the Parco Storico del Monte Sole.

The fauna of the park includes animals of great interest alongside more common ones; the park is populated by deer, roe deer, fallow deer and wild boar as well as by 65 bird species that nest in the Park.

Amphibians such as the edible frog and stripeless tree frog populate the Reno and Setta Rivers, the waterways and pools of water.

There are also many reptiles, including the asp and lizard.
