Taro

Parco Fluviale Regionale del Taro...the bird park

The park covers 2,500 hectares following the Taro River for 20 km. This park is of great ornithological interest as it hosts more than 270 species of birds; of particular interest the migratory avifauna. Some birds such as the little tern, common tern, stone curlew, and little ringed plover nest on the exposed river bed, while others, such as the black-crowned night heron and the little egret, nest in the riparian woods. The sheltered meanders are populated by ducks.

FLORA

The upper terraces of the park are mainly covered by woods with trees (willows, poplars and alders) and shrubs (hazelnut, cornelian cherry and common hawthorn). Reeds and rushes stand out in the canals of resurgent water and in stagnant water, while a rare botanical species grows in the meadows - the Coriaria myrtifolia - which in this region can only be found along the river.

PLACES OF INTEREST

There are many places of interest worth visiting in the park: the row of mulberry trees, the Chiesa di Madregolo, Villa Anguissola, Corte di Giarola, the Chiesa di Oppiano, and the Pieve of Fornovo.
