Snow on Reggio Emilia Apennines
Snow on the Reggio Emilia Apennines: classic, fun and alternative.
The offer of winter sports has extended from the traditional “alpine” disciplines to the very new and trendy activities which can be practiced in a welcoming and hospitable atmosphere typical of the Emilia region.
The recent creation of the Parco Nazionale dell'Appennino Tosco-Emiliano, which features snow and woods, slopes and meadows, peat bogs and forestry roads, has brought added value to this environment which generates emotions and offers many outdoor sports and activities, from the simplest ones to the most difficult ones. Around the sports facilities there is a greater ‘sports centre’ to be discovered which is open all year round: the natural environment of the Apennines. An uncontaminated, clean and often enchanted world; easy to enjoy and experience in different ways according to one’s possibilities.
In winter the Reggio Emilia Apennines become a popular destination during the skiing season. The different resorts, each with their particular features, all offer top quality services and facilities. There are resorts equipped for inter-regional flows and smaller, family run resorts. Cerreto Laghi, a resort at 1344 m in the Apennines, surrounds a glacial lake at the foot of Mount Nuda, a few kilometres from the Cerreto Pass. The opening of an Ice Rink has enriched and diversified the recreational and sports offer. A great number of top quality hotels and other types of accommodation are available including the recent campsite. The resort of Febbio 2000 in Villa Minozzo is the highest balcony overlooking the Apennines. It has chairlifts that climb up Mount Cusna to 2063 metres. The modern systems and the kilometres of runs offer skiers a wide choice. Ventasso Laghi is a ski resort that has developed without any impact on the environment in an area of great natural interest. Civago, one of the most popular summer resorts in the Apennines, has recently become a small but modern ski resort. Ospitaletto, not far from Ligonchio, the highest chief town of the mountain area of Reggio Emilia, features a few kilometres of runs in a cosy atmosphere with family run accommodation. In addition to the sport and recreational activities offered by the winter resorts, the Parco Nazionale dell'Appennino Tosco-Emiliano manages the Centro Sportivo Neve Natura di Pianvallese Febbio (Pianvallese Febbio Snow Nature Sports Centre) in Villa Minozzo, a structure that features a 3.5 km
approved cross-country skiing loop and where cross-country skiing, excursions, winter walking, Nordic walking and racketing can be practiced. The welcoming structure is at the edge of a mountain peat bog and features changing rooms, equipment hire, and organises lessons and courses. In the Parco Nazionale dell’Appennino Tosco-Emiliano, in the province of Reggio Emilia, in addition to the Centro Sportivo Neve Natura, there are also other structures which hire snow rackets and provide information and suggestions on the best trails to follow to appreciate the natural and scenic value of this area:
