Cycle Paths In The Plain Around Parma

Over the last few years this section of the Po river plain in the province of Parma has become a paradise for lovers of leisurely cycle tourism; a wide network of cycle paths created by the provincial administration connects the main sites of interest in the plain around Parma.

Length: 50 km. Itinerary: along the bank of the River Po through the municipalities from Polesine Parmense to Mezzani. Type of itinerary: cycle path that runs mainly along the river bank and minor roads near Colorno. Time: 5 hours excluding stops.  The itinerary includes some rest points with mooring areas along the river dedicated to tourism and sport: Port of Polesine, Nautica di Torricella in Sissa, Motonautica di Sacca in Colorno and soon a new mooring point in Mezzani. The Po River landscape: a strip of land among the meanders of the Taro River, from the woods of Maria Luigia in Torricella to the Riserva Parma Morta in the old bed of a stream in the municipality of Mezzani. The cycle path crosses the tasty itinerary of the Strada del Culatello di Zibello (Culatello di Zibello Route), where the famous Culatello can be savoured in one of the many gastronomic stops along the route.

Verdi itinerary cycle path

Length: 17 km. Itinerary: from Polesine Parmense to Soragna passing through Busseto and Roncole Verdi. Type of itinerary: cycle path with some sections along minor roads. The main square in Busseto is named after the music Maestro; the Rocca, the Chiesa della Collegiata, residences with porticoes and the monument to Verdi overlook the square. Nearby, Villa S. Agata  is also worth visiting to admire the photographs and personal objects of the composer.

Not to be missed the anthological exhibition wanted and organised by his children in Roncole Verdi, the Centro del Boscaccio in Diolo di Soragna and above all the small village of Fontanelle, where Guareschi was born, near the castle of Roccabianca.

Ciclotaro cycle path

Length: 8.5 km. Itinerary: from Trecasali to Viarolo. Type of itinerary: cycle path along the bank of the river Taro up to Trecasali; in September it will be connected to the BiciParmaPo itinerary. Time: 1 hour excluding stops.  The cycle/foot path unfolds along the right bank of the river Taro and connects Trecasali to Viarolo along a well signposted and equipped path. Just a few km off the path towards Torrile there is a LIPU Birdlife Sanctuary set up after the discovery of a couple of nesting Black Winged Stilts that still today nest in the sanctuary which features a number of birdwatching shelters.

One hundred and eighty bicycles are available for hire in the 10 municipalities of this area (Busseto, Colorno, Fontanellato, Mezzani, Polesine Parmense, Roccabianca, San Secondo, Sissa, Soragna and Zibello) which are connected by local cycle paths such as BiciParmaPo which runs along the river bank and along the Strada del Culatello di Zibello (Culatello di Zibello Route). This is an important project backed by the Province of Parma that pursues the sustainable development of the territory around the Po River. Its aim is to create new and useful services for tourists attracted by this land rich in culture, tastes and traditions and home of famous people such as Giuseppe Verdi and Giovannino Guareschi.
