The Western Apennines In The Province Of Parma

...adrenalin and enthusiasm to the west

The Taro and Ceno Valleys that characterise this part of the Apennines feature a particularly rich and interesting natural environment particularly suitable for kayaking; this area is well known to lovers of this unusual sport for the particular characteristics of the Taro and Ceno Rivers and some of their tributaries. Other opportunities to practice sport in direct contact with nature in spring and summer are also available; for trekking lovers there is the Anello della Val Ceno, a 131 km loop trail that can be split into about 37 shorter itineraries accessible to everyone; the Taro Valley also offers a great number of trails some of which reach Liguria and Tuscany. The most striking trekking route of the Western Apennines surrounding Parma is named "La via degli Scalpellini", a recently opened trail that combines the magical landscape of the “Salti del Diavolo" (a particular geological formation) with the historical traces of the Via Francigena (for those seeking a longer route there is a 210 km itinerary that starts in Fidenza, crosses the Taro and Baganza Valleys and ends in Lucca). Mountain bike lovers can enjoy the Anello della Valceno described above, which like almost all the trekking trails in the Taro Valley is also suitable for mountain  biking. This area is perfect for equestrian tourism; a large number of farmhouses, specialised in equestrian tourism and horse breeding (the famous Bardigiano breed), offer the necessary facilities along the horse trail of the Taro and Ceno Valleys, which is 135 km long with a further 55 km of alternative routes.
